How to improve the energy and carbon performance of buildings in Europe? The Shift Project answers consultation on the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

Reducing the carbon and energy footprint of buildings is a key element for Europe to reach carbon neutrality, given that the building sector amount for 40% of Europe’s final energy consumption and 36% of its greenhouse gas emissions. Alongside its recommendations at the French level, the Shift Project provided suggestions on how to amend the main European legislation on this aspect, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

The proposal is set to be published before the end of 2021 and could create an ambitious European framework to accelerate the renovation rate and improve the carbon performance of buildings. To do so, the Shift Project highlighted its main messages in the public consultation, a questionnaire from the European Commission to gather suggestions for the revision of the directive.
