Why does Bouygues support The Shift Project?
We support The Shift Project because we share the same vision of the world, the same analysis of climate and energy constraints and of their social, environmental and economic consequences. According to us, The Shift Project should be a whistle-blower and suggest innovative solutions.
The Bouygues Group has a proactive policy towards carbon. We want to evaluate our emissions in order to reduce our carbon intensity through the permanent evolution of our internal processes and the conception of our products and services, while increasing our revenue and profitability.
In 2013, Bouygues integrated the CDLI index of the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), an important recognition of the sincerity of our action. Today, we are effectively able to evaluate the carbon footprint of our buildings and infrastructure projects. This evaluation enables us to offer our clients alternative solutions with low carbon intensity compatible with the economic constraints through time. We merely regret that the “low-carbon intensity” option has not yet been sufficiently taken into account as criteria by project developers. We count on The Shift Project to convey a convincing message to these decision-makers. The global cost approach should be preferred because the classic sequential approach masks the reality of the cost structures.
We encourage serious thinking on the economic models that have to emerge in the medium term perspective of increasing fossil fuel prices. We need to be able to speak in terms of economics when we talk about carbon. The classical approach by sales volume has to be rethought for a different approach - based on product use and life cycle - in order to reduce the consumption of resources while maintaining the same volume of overall activity. Economic innovations are to be experimented and tested in this perspective.
We are faced with an issue in which the short term and the long term seem to contradict. But, to resolve this equation is nothing more than a calculation of return on investment. Actually, this is an inevitable issue for a company that has been constructing buildings for 50 years and will soon build entire districts. This leads us to the following point: the introduction of the carbon debate in the financial sphere. The Shift Project has to prompt the discussion in this sector that has a tendency to think that its “immateriality” protects it from the problem.
Getting ready to live with the fact that oil is structurally more and more expensive cannot be solitary work. We need to work on the integrated chain of production, which means with our suppliers. Here too, The Shift Project capable of conveying the type of message that we wish to convey.
Finally, we are the instigators of the new initiative of the Shift Project related to the creation of an index which will allow individuals in France to measure their short, medium and long term energy vulnerability especially as determined by type of housing and geographic location. The goal is at first to establish an objective assessment of the situation of each person. Then to propose concrete solutions to preserve individuals from the fuel poverty that jeopardizes the minimum quality of life to which all are entitled.
For all these reasons, we would like, through The Shift Project, to make known the nature of our commitment because we have nothing to conceal with respect to our initiatives in terms of sustainable development.
